A new alliance of various pro-immigration groups, the Campaign for an Accountable, Moral, and Balanced Immigration Overhaul (CAMBIO), is making its debut this week with the goal of defending reform legislation from attacks on the right.

As part of their launch, CAMBIO is set to release a poll on Tuesday by Democratic firm Belden Russonello of 1,000 registered voters on immigration issues connected to human rights and due process. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percent.

According to the survey, some 68 percent of respondents said they support an immigration bill that includes an earned path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants when given the choice between such a policy and mass deportation. Past polls have found that a path to citizenship gets its highest level of support when respondents are asked to choose between the two options.

The poll’s questions give a good sense of where CAMBIO plans to make its name in the debate. On border security, 85 percent of respondents said they favor prioritizing federal resources towards stopping drug and weapons trafficking instead of illegal immigration. On enforcement, some 80 percent said they favor allowing suspected unauthorized immigrants to have their cases reviewed by a judge before being deported rather than be allowed to be detained indefinitely wihtout seeing a judge.

The coalition behind CAMBIO includes the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU Regional Center for Border Rights, the Border Network for Human Rights, Detention Watch Network, National Day Laborer Organizing Network, National Domestic Workers Alliance, the National Guest Worker Alliance, the National Immigration Law Center, Rights Working Group, and the Southern Border Communities Coalition.
