A 5.7 earthquake and subsequent landslide buried more than 20 houses and may have killed up to 100 people in northern Afghanistan. The earthquake, which took place in the Baghlan province, caused a landslide massive enough to force rescuers to give up on using shovels and await bulldozers in order to unearth buildings and victims. As the AP reports, “there were no visible signs of buildings” underneath the landslide.
The 5.7 quake was preceded by a 5.4 quake in the Hindu Kush region. Both earthquakes were felt in Kabul, though no damage was reported in the capital.
