A new NBC / Marist poll of next week’s Republican primary contest in Michigan shows the race tightening to a statistical tie, with Mitt Romney having rapidly closed the gap on Rick Santorum. In an NBC / Marist poll of Arizona, Romney is comfortably ahead.

In Michigan, Romney nets 37 percent to Santorum’s 35 percent, suggesting that predictions of Romney’s demise in the state may have been premature. Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) follows with 13 percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich 8 percent.

In Arizona, Romney gets a bit more breathing room with 43 percent of likely Republican primary voters. Santorum follows at 27 percent, Gingrich at 16 and Paul 11.
