President Obama leads a new poll of Iowa with 50 percent over Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s 42 percent, according to a new poll released Thursday from Marist College and commissioned by NBC News.

Romney faces a similar problem in Iowa as he does in Marist’s poll of Colorado — a large gap between his personal rating and Obama’s. The president sees a positive 53 percent favorable/42 percent unfavorable divide, while Romney is at a 42 percent favorable/50 percent unfavorable split.

“The gap between Iowa voters who think things are headed in the right direction as opposed to those who say it’s moving in the wrong direction has narrowed by more than half,” said Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion in a release. “This change is giving President Obama a boost in the state.”

The PollTracker Average of Iowa shows a 0.7 percent lead for Obama, as another poll from Republican-leaning Rasmussen out Thursday put the race at 47 percent for Romney and 44 percent for Obama.
