NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Tuesday that the alliance condemns “in the strongest terms” Syria’s attack on a Turkish plane last week over international waters. “The security of the alliance is indivisible, we stand together with Turkey in the spirit of strong solidarity,” Rasmussen said.
Members of NATO met on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the incident, but Rasmussen made no mention of any form of allied retaliation against Syria. It was only the second time in NATO’s 63-year history that the military alliance’s members have met under Article 4, which allows for consultations when a member state believes its political independence, territorial integrity, or security is under threat.
