Polling guru Nate Silver on Monday responded to the NYT public editor’s observation that Silver never really fit into the paper’s culture and that some respected journalists in the newsroom disliked his work.

“I had plenty of support from [New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson] and other key people at the Times,” Silver said during a phone press conference with reporters Monday. “This culture stuff was not a big factor.”

The New York Times reported Friday that the man behind the successful FiveThirtyEight franchise would be leaving the paper for ESPN and ABC.
