With the government due to shut down in a week unless the lame duck Congress agrees on funding, Pelosi has encouraged House Speaker John Boehner to work with Democrats to work together on a funding bill while she confronts internal conflicts from rank-and-file Democrats. Though conciliatory about being in the minority, Pelosi cautioned her Democratic caucus not to rush to support a Republican plan until they know exactly what’s in the bill. (AP Photo/J. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was visibly shocked when she was asked about Sen. Barbara Boxer’s (D-CA) decision to not seek re-election.

News of Boxer’s decision broke as Pelosi was delivering a weekly press briefing. Pelsoi was asked right at the end and paused for a few moments, clearly taken by surprise.

Pelosi said Boxer called to talk to the top House Democrat personally but Pelosi didn’t think it would be about re-election plans.

“She called, she wanted to talk to me personally. I thought she wanted to have dinner tonight or something,” Pelosi joked.

Pelosi added that Boxer’s “leaving will be a great loss to the United States, the people of California and, the country.”

“It’s a great loss,” Pelosi said.
