On MSNBC’s “Daily Rundown” Tuesday morning, North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue refused to answer questions about whether she supports gay marriage. Instead, as voters in her state weigh in on Amendment One, which would ban both same-sex marriage and civil unions, Perdue said the measure should be rejected because it strips away basic rights. “Today is not about that, Chuck, it’s about simply trying to not approve an amendment that pushes North Carolina backwards,” Perdue said.

Todd pressed Perdue on her position, pointing out that, like President Obama, Perdue is walking a fine line being against the amendment but not expressly in favor of gay marriage.

Todd: Do you understand the awkwardness of basically saying you’re against banning gay marriage but not for it? And that’s where the president is. Sounds like that’s where you are. It’s a head scratcher to a lot of people watching this debate over the last 48 hours.

Perdue: Chuck, let me just be very direct. Y’all can continue to scratch your head for another 48 hours. It’s very important to me that the folks in North Carolina who have not cast their ballot understand that this constitutional amendment takes away a lot of civil liberties, civil rights. It’s not about gay marriage. That is not what this issue is about. We have a statute on the books. So for the voters in North Carolina, don’t be confused. Go in there and vote no.
