The murder trial for Bo Xilai’s wife has begun in China, presenting one of the most sensational, bizarre criminal cases the country has seen in decades. Largely seen as a form of political comeuppance for the divisive Bo, the wife of the former governor has been accused of murdering British businessman Neil Heywood, whom she believed had “threatened her son’s physical safety.”

Details of the murder have begun to trickle out, with prosecutors claiming Gu drank tea and alcohol with Heywood before she “poured [poison] into Heywood’s mouth.” Gu’s lawyers did not dispute the murder claims, but did say that “Heywood should bear a certain responsibility for the cause of his murder.”
