The Motion Picture Association of America is amping up its war against online piracy. On Monday afternoon, the lobbying organization announced it had hired a new “Senior Vice President of Content Protection, Internet.” Marc Miller comes to the MPAA from Nintendo America, where he served as Anti-Piracy Counsel for Americas and Asia/Pacific.

Before that, Miller was a lawyer with the U.S. Department of Justice, specializing in cyber intellectual properties issues. As a DOJ lawyer, Miller in 2008 recieved an award from a software lobbying organization for “spearheading numerous successful criminal copyright infringement prosecutions against some of the country’s most notorious online auction software pirates.”

In a statement emailed to reporters, the MPAA noted:

“At Nintendo, Miller successfully implemented content protection enforcement programs addressing P2P, cyberlockers, e-commerce and action sites.”

Miller’s new boss, the MPAA’s Michael Robinson, Executive Vice President for Content Protection, had this to say about the new content rights enforcer:

“Marc’s extensive background in the enforcement sector will be invaluable to furthering the MPAA’s global online content protection strategy,” Robinson said. “Our commitment to protecting legitimate enterprise remains top priority for the Association. We are thrilled to have Marc on board to strengthen our operations in over 27 countries worldwide, including Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.”

The new hire comes on the heels of MPAA CEO Chris Dodd telling Variety magazine in a recent interview that the MPAA would soften its description of piracy and shouldn’t refer to it as “thievery” any longer.

Whether the MPAA considers online piracy thievery or not, it’s clear from the hire of Miller that it still views piracy as a major problem and one worthy of being fought with dollars and manpower.
