The Richard Mourdock campaign has released an internal poll in the Indiana Senate race, claiming to have taken a narrow lead over long-time incumbent Sen. Dick Lugar in the Republican primary, which will be held on May 8.

The numbers: Mourdock 42 percent, Lugar 41 percent, within the poll’s 4.9 percent margin of error. The poll was commissioned by the Mourdock campaign, and conducted by Republican polling firm McLaughlin & Associates from April 16-17.

Mourdock said in a press release:

“These poll results confirm what I have been hearing on the campaign trail for that past several months. After 36 years, Republican Primary voters believe Senator Lugar is out of touch with their concerns and ready to elect a true conservative to the U.S. Senate.

“After the millions of dollars in personal negative attack ads by Senator Lugar and his Super PACS against me, Hoosier Republicans aren’t buying what they are trying to sell.”
