The ripple effect of Sen. Olympia Snowe’s (R-ME) retirement announcement continues in Maine. According to the Bangor Daily News, both Maine Secretary of State Charlie Summers and State Treasurer Bruce Poliquin are weighing runs for the Republican nomination to replace Snowe in the Senate, beginning to collect the 2,000 signatures needed from registered party members by March 15th.

Now the congressional chief-of-staff to Congressman Mike Michaud (D-ME), Peter Chandler, has announced that he’ll be exploring a run for Congress should US Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) attempt to jump to the Senate. Maine only has two congressional districts — Chandler is a staffer for Michaud, who represents the second, but Chandler himself lives in the first, now represented by Pingree.

“Given the events of the past 24 hours, I have taken out nomination papers to consider a run for the First Congressional District. Congresswoman Pingree and her family have a difficult decision to make over the next few days, and I will support her 100% no matter what decision she makes,” Chandler wrote on his facebook page. “In the meantime, we will begin collecting the necessary signatures.”
