Partial vote counts showed the cleric Hassan Rohani with a “commanding” lead over his rivals in Iran’s presidential election, Reuters reported on Saturday. Rohani is considered a moderate, and, according to Reuters, the latest tallies suggest “what could be the makings of a surprise victory over favored hardliners.”

From the news service:

Though an establishment figure, Rohani is a former chief nuclear negotiator known for his conciliatory approach. He has pledged to promote a foreign policy of “constructive interaction with the world” and to enact a “civil rights charter” at home.
