The third quarter saw worldwide sales of mobile phones decline 3.1 percent from the same period last year, according to the new tally released Wednesday by market analysis firm Gartner.
However, smartphone sales were up 46.9 percent from last year, now accounting for just about half (46.9 percent) of all mobile phone sales around the world.
Most impressive: Google’s Android mobile operating system accounted for 72.4 percent of the total global mobile sales in the third quarter, far and away ahead of second place Apple’s iOS with 13.9 percent, and Research in Motion (maker of BlackBerry) with 5.3 percent.
