Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon (D) on Tuesday repeatedly evaded questions about same-sex marriage.

At an event to promote his Medicaid expansion plan in Liberty, Mo., Nixon was asked if he thought his constituents have moved with the rest of the country since overwhelmingly passing a law in 2004 that banned gay marriage and civil unions.

“I wouldn’t speak about whether Missourians are moving or not, although I do talk to a lot of them,” Nixon said. “I would only say that in the setting we’re in right now, there’s going to be plenty of time to look at what to discuss on that issue in the future.”

Asked by a reporter for KMBC-TV if he’s “moved” on the issue, Nixon, who’s previously expressed opposition to gay nuptials, said he “wouldn’t use that word.” When the reporter pressed the governor, Nixon once again ducked the question and instead sought to pivot the topic back to Medicaid.

“Move? Evolve? What word would you use?” the reporter asked.

“I would use the word that, that today’s event was about something, about this, and my focus over the next six weeks in this legislative session is on this topic,” Nixon said.
