Local news anchors in Colorado Springs, Colorado did not appreciate former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s recent comments about their district.

In an interview with Rolling Stone published Tuesday, Bloomberg, who donated big money to an ultimately unsuccessful campaign to defend pro-gun control Democratic state lawmakers against recall efforts, cast those areas of Colorado as backwoods.

“The NRA went after two or three state Senators in a part of Colorado where I don’t think there’s roads. It’s as far rural as you can get,” Bloomberg said. “And, yes, they lost recall elections. I’m sorry for that. We tried to help ’em. But the bottom line is, the law is on the books, and being enforced. You can get depressed about the progress, but on the other hand, you’re saving a lot of lives.”

The reaction to that quote by a pair of Colorado television anchors was quickly surfaced by the Republican research super PAC America Rising.

“Well the mayor may not realize the recalls happened in Colorado Springs and in Pueblo,” KKTV anchor Dianne Derby said. “The Springs is the second-largest city in the state, while Pueblo is the seventh.”

“And we have plenty of paved roads,” her co-anchor Don Ward added.

Denver TV station KDVR reported that Colorado Republicans were attempting to tie Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) and Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO), both of whom are up for re-election, to Bloomberg’s remarks.
