Microsoft appears to have revealed its release date for its upcoming Surface tablet. According to a recent annual filing by Microsoft with the Securities and Exchange Commission: “The next version of our operating system, Windows 8, will be generally available on October 26, 2012. At that time, we will begin selling the Surface, a series of Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware devices.”
The Surface will be a historic break in tradition for Microsoft, the company’s first ever branded computing device in its 37 years of existence, and a clear sign that the company leadership believes it needs to do more to compete with Apple’s enormously popular iPad and a wave of other tablet devices running versions of Google’s Android software.
