Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) on Tuesday said the looming automatic spending cuts will hit his state especially hard.

“It’s going to be very bad for my state, but more importantly, I think it’s going to be devastating to the military,” McDonnell said on MSNBC. About 90,000 Department of Defense employees could be furloughed if the cuts go into effect, CBS News reported.

McDonnell said the federal government needs to cut spending, but it’s wrong to do so at the expense of the military.

“We still have kids in Afghanistan, and this is not the right way to do it. It’s a haphazard policy. They need to cut spending. But don’t put it on the back of our kids in uniform.”
