Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) re-election team on Wednesday highlighted the results of an internal poll that shows the incumbent with a massive lead over his tea party challenger.
The survey, conducted for the campaign by GOP pollster Jan van Lohuizen, shows 68 percent of Republican primary voters in Kentucky giving the nod to McConnell, while just 21 percent said they will support businessman Matt Bevin. According to the survey, only eight percent of GOP primary voters said they are undecided.
While it looks increasingly likely that McConnell could be in for a grueling general election matchup against Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, polls thus far have shown the GOP leader with plenty of breathing room against Bevin. Another Republican poll last month found a huge gap between McConnell and Bevin.
Nevertheless, McConnell doesn’t appear to be taking the conservative challenger lightly. His campaign released a new television ad earlier this week that blasts Bevin for listing the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on his LinkedIn page. MIT officials said the program Bevin listed was not affiliated with the school.
