Representatives from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's campaign met with the FBI on Wednesday, according to NBC News, after the senior senator requested an investigation when a secret tape emerged of a strategy session regarding Ashley Judd’s potential candidacy and her mental health.
The officials met with McConnell staff for about an hour at their re-election headquarters in Kentucky, and "handed over pertinent information to agents," a source told NBC News Wednesday.
McConnell accused the “political left” of using "Watergate-era" tactics by illegally bugging his campaign headquarters on Tuesday.
"This is Gestapo-kind of scare tactics, and we're not going to stand for it," Jesse Benton, McConnell's campiagn manager said on Mike Huckabee's radio show.
As TPM previously reported on Wednesday, the question of whether the person who recorded the meeting committed a crime turns entirely on whether he or she was an invited participant.
