On This Week Sunday, Jake Tapper asked Sen. John McCain what he thought of the situation involving his former supporter, Sheriff Babeu of Arizona.

McCain responded that his “friend” Babeu deserved the “benefit…of innocence until proven guilty.” As he told Tapper: “I do not know the details, except what has been published in the media.  And I’m sure there will be a thorough and complete investigation, if there is any allegations of wrongdoing.  All I can say is that he also deserves the benefit, as every citizen does, of innocence until proven guilty.  But I appreciate the support that he gave me in my campaign and always will.”

Sheriff Babeu of Arizona was accused of threatening to deport his ex-boyfriend, an illegal immigrant, if he outed him. This is the same sheriff who appeared in Sen. John McCain’s famous 2010 campaign ad which faces him walking along the border with Babeu saying they needed to “complete the danged fence.”

Babeu is a supporter of Mitt Romney and resigned from his post as state campaign co-chair. He is also a congressional candidate.
