Massachusetts Democratic Party spokesman Kevin Franck gave TPM this statement, on the new pact by Republican Sen. Scott Brown and presumptive Democratic nominee Elizabeth Warren to keep out third-party spending in the race:

“The Massachusetts Democratic Party will not engage in any activity, including paid advertisements, that promotes one candidate over another until the primary election process has run its course and Massachusetts Democrats choose a nominee for U.S. Senate. We plan to beat Scott Brown by continuing to grow and strengthen our state-wide grassroots infrastructure that helped us reelect Gov. Patrick, win every statewide race and send an entirely Democratic congressional delegation to Washington in 2010, not through paid advertisements. We intend to comply with the People’s Pledge and urge the Massachusetts Republican Party to do so as well.”

The Brown-Warren pact involves discouraging outside groups from coming in, by each campaign pledging to donate from its own account to a charity of the other’s choosing, an amount equal to 50% of the ad buy of a third-party group that either supports that candidate or attacks the opponent.

When asked for clarification, Franck confirmed to TPM that the pledge will apply to both the primary and general election seasons.
