Answering questions on the social news website Reddit, members of NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover control team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said that it was unlikely the car-sized rover would ever leave its current home, Gale Crater — a 96-mile-wide depression on the surface of the Red Planet that scientists think may have once retained water in ancient times.

“Probably won’t leave Gale crater. It’s huge! and there is plenty of interesting science to do there,” wrote Steve Collins, the rover’s cruise altitude and control systems engineer.
