As the special Senate election in Massachusetts enters the general election phase, Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) attacked Republican opponent Gabriel Gomez Wednesday by claiming that Gomez is more extreme than former Republican Sen. Scott Brown.

“Gabriel Gomez: He’s No Scott Brown,” the memo’s subject reads.

Gomez, a former Navy SEAL and who spent years in private equity, is painting himself as an outsider businessman ready to reform government and work across the aisle. Conversely, the Markey campaign memo highlights several issues where Gomez falls to the right of Brown.

“Republicans were looking for the second coming of Scott Brown,” the memo states. “Instead, they got Gabriel Gomez. He is a Republican. He is running for Senate. But the similarities end there.”

  • Sensible Gun Laws: Gabriel Gomez opposes an assault weapons ban, which Scott Brown supports.
  • A Woman’s Right To Choose: Gabriel Gomez is pro-life and can’t be trusted to protect a woman’s right to choose; Scott Brown says he is pro-choice.
  • Social Security: Gabriel Gomez supports cuts to current Social Security recipients, which Scott Brown opposes.
  • Wall Street Reform: Scott Brown voted for the landmark Wall Street Reform bill, which Gabriel Gomez opposes.
  • People’s Pledge: Scott Brown signed the People’s Pledge; Gabriel Gomez has refused to sign it.
