In an interview with New York magazine published Saturday, former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo described how his personality differed from his old political foe, former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, who died on Friday.
“I think the basic difference is that I did not have the same regard for myself as he had for himself,” Cuomo said. “It’s not that I thought of myself as evil in any way, but I found it very difficult to think of myself as particularly special. I don’t have much of a personality. He has a great deal of personality. He could be very funny and very tough. He was very much like the old New York, where there were some real tough guys and some real schmoes, a little bit of everything there.”
Cuomo went on to say that Koch was the quintessential mayor and “not so much a politician as an institution.”
