A Democrat in Maine flags an important detail about the race to replace retiring Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) — the state’s filing deadline for partisan candidates is fast approaching, on March 15th.

It’s important not only because Senate candidates from either party will need to get between 2,000 and 3,000 signatures of party enrollees within the next two weeks, but because if one or both of the sitting Democratic U.S. representatives from the state (Rep. Chellie Pingree and Rep. Mike Michaud) decide to run, then candidates for newly opened House seats would have to do the same, requiring them to collect 1,000 to 1,500 themselves.

The usual and easiest way to gather those signatures is at the state’s caucuses, which both parties have already held, the Democrats only two days ago. The Dem source called that “no surprise,” considering the timing of the Snowe announcement.
