A city-parish councilman in Lafayette, La. wants to ban gay pride flags from being flown on government property after hearing complaints from a local military veteran, the Lafayette Daily Advertiser reported on Friday.

Councilman Andy Naquin told the newspaper he was drafting an ordinance to ban all flags other than American, Louisiana and local government flags — as well as “possibly Mardi Gras flags,” the newspaper noted — from being flown on government flag poles.

The move came after a Korean War veteran complained about a newspaper photo that showed gay rights supporters hoisting a rainbow flag up a pole in a local park.

“I had to agree with him,” Naquin told the Daily Advertiser. “Government flag poles really should be meant to fly only government flags.”
