Several hundred people gathered at the Seattle Space Needle Wednesday night and into Thursday morning to celebrate a new law that legalizes possession of up to one ounce of marijuana taking effect at midnight, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The law does not allow smoking in public, but police have agreed to look the other way. “[T]he department’s going to give you a generous grace period to help you adjust to this brave, new, and maybe kinda stoned world we live in,” a spokesman for the Seattle Police Department wrote on the SPD blotter.
