University of Missouri graduate student Jonathan Butler joined the panel on Tuesday’s episode of “The Nightly Show” to talk about rise of student protests on college campuses.

“It all seemed to have started at your campus, at Missouri, or least, the viralness of it,” host Larry Wilmore said. “What the hell is going on at colleges?”

Butler replied, “This is nothing new.”

What is new is the addition of social media into the civil rights movement, he said.

“It truly is a double-edge sword because it opens up the opportunity for solidarity and for this movement to spread at a much rapid pace,” Butler said. “They didn’t have access to what we have, but the dirty side is the hatred that spews out, the threats that we get on campus.”
