Wayne LaPierre, the CEO of the National Rifle Association, argued Thursday that President Obama’s rhetoric about protecting schoolchildren is a “charade” because he did not mention school safety specifically in his State of the Union speech Tuesday night.
“In that speech, the President displayed a level of public deception that simply cannot be ignored,” LaPierre said in a speech at the National Wild Turkey Federation’s annual convention. “President Obama had nothing to say about school security and nothing he said has anything to do with protecting one child in any school in this country.”
These missing words, LaPierre said, indicate that Obama was simply using the Newtown, Conn., school massacre to push through his anti-gun agenda. After winning re-election, LaPierre said, Obama was looking “for the right opportunity” to “destroy our Second Amendment rights.”
As the NRA has argued in recent days, LaPierre stressed that this agenda includes “national registration of every single gun owner” in America.
