Kuwait’s emir announced this weekend that he will suspend parliament for one month in anticipation of the planned questioning of the interior minister by the assembly’s opposition members, says Reuters. The Kuwaiti constitution allows Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah to take this step, which will grant time for negotiations between the government and elected parliament members.

Opposition members, who hold the parliamentary majority, are seeking to question Interior Minister Sheikh Ahmad al-Hamoud al-Sabah about Kuwait’s citizenship law and stateless residents. The inquiry comes after both the finance minister and the minister of social affairs and labour resigned in the face of similar questioning.
