Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) said Tuesday the American people need to “step back a little and look at the facts” regarding the National Security Agency’s collection of millions of phone records, defending the program and saying that it doesn’t appear that the government engaged in eavesdropping.

Klobuchar told Politico that the program will gain “credibility” as more facts are made public.

“I think the American people are gonna have to step back a little and look at the facts here. It appears from what we know so far that the NSA, for American citizens, was not looking at the content of these phone calls,” Klobuchar said. “They were not even looking at the identity of who was making the phone calls. They were simply getting a humongous database and then, with court permission, would go in and check certain numbers to see if they match the calls that were being made. And I think that has to come out.

She added: “The more we can get this information out, so the American people can truly look at this, I think there will be more credibility for this program.”

Klobuchar joined her fellow Minnesota Democrat, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), in defending a program that has rankled much of the left. Franken said earlier this month that he knows the NSA’s surveillance “has been successful in preventing terrorism.”
