April Miller and Karen Roberts, the Kentucky couple who sued defiant county clerk Kim Davis married on Saturday night, the Associated Press reported.
The couple had a rule for their special day — nobody could mention Davis.
Davis became a national figure this summer when she defied multiple court orders to issue licenses to same-sex couples — and was eventually jailed for contempt.
Miller and Roberts were one of three other couples who took Davis to court. While Davis was in jail, Miller and Roberts went to her office and got a marriage license signed by a deputy clerk, the AP reported.
They had to eventually return the license to the office “for recording” but were concerned about what would happen when Davis returned. So, they got married in their home. But it wasn’t what Roberts said she imagined for her wedding, so they held a larger ceremony over the weekend, according to the report.
Miller and Roberts have been a couple for 11 years and have cared for their disabled daughter together, according to the report.
The couple’s lawsuit against Davis is expected to continue for “many months more,” according to the AP.
