Kickstarter, the New York-based crowdfunding website, raised a cumulative $319.8 million from 2.2 million people for over 18,000 successfully funded projects over the course of 2012, as it announced on its blog Tuesday. That equates to over $606 being pledged every minute throughout the year. 17 projects raised over $1 million.
Kickstarter also noted in a slick online presentation that people from 177 different countries, or 90 percent, backed projects in 2012.
The total funding amount for 2012 is also more than double what Kickstarter projected it would raise in February 2012, when co-founder Yancey Strickler said that Kickstarter was on track to provide more funding for creative projects than the National Endowment for the Arts.
