Secretary of State John Kerry and Afghan President Hamid Karzai appeared to have mended bridges between their two countries during Kerry’s unannounced visit to Afghanistan Monday, the Associated Press reported. Kerry arrived shortly after the United States military handed over control Parwan, its last detention facility in Afghanistan.

At a joint news conference, Kerry said that despite tensions that arose from Karzai’s accusation that the U.S. was engaging in talks with the Taliban to weaken Afghanistan, the two countries are now “on the same page” on the issue of peace talks with the Taliban.

“So we’re on the same page. I don’t think there is any disagreement between us and I am comfortable with his explanation,” Kerry said.

The trip was Kerry’s first visit to Afghanistan since becoming secretary of state.
