The Boston Herald reports that a Massachusetts judge has rejected a lawsuit seeking to strike the phrase “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance. Claiming that the phrase is not a religious truth, Judge S. Jane Haggerty wrote that the pledge “is a voluntary patriotic exercise, and the inclusion of the phrase ‘under God’ does not convert the exercise into a prayer.”

While the names of the children and parents bringing forward the lawsuit were not disclosed, they were represented by the American Humanist Association, which has promised to appeal the ruling.
