A federal judge ruled on Tuesday that the most contentious part of the Arizona immigration law known as SB 1070 could take effect immediately, allowing police officers to question suspects about their citizenship.

The Associated Press reported that Judge Susan Bolton lifted the legal blockade that had been keeping what is left of the law from taking effect while the courts heard arguments over it. The U.S. Supreme Court threw out most of the wider-ranging law earlier this year but ruled that this critical portion was constitutional.
