Late-night king Jon Stewart returned to “The Daily Show” on Monday night to shame national lawmakers, particularly Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), for not extending the Zadroga Act, which grants healthcare to 9/11 first responders.

“Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky doesn’t give a shit about anything but politics. The first responders were told the Zadroga Act would be included — they were told this last week — would be included in the transportation bill passed last week,” Stewart said. “Mitch McConnell of Kentucky pulled it out of the transportation bill last week when he didn’t get concessions about loosening oil export regulations.”

Stewart then invited the same members of his 2010 panel that helped to humanize the need for a healthcare bill for first responders.

Only one man could make it.

Two were too ill to attend after five and a half years. One had died.

“We did your show five and a half years ago. You stepped up and you asked what you could do to help us. Five and a half years ago, we didn’t have enough votes to get Zadroga passed the first time,” first responder Kenny Specht said.

Specht and his team met with McConnell.

“Mitch McConnell gave us his word that he’s going to attach us to the omnibus bill and he’s going to fully fund and permanently extend the Zadroga Healthcare Act. That’s what he told us,” Specht said. “As this bill comes up this week, we’re going to keep him to his word. And this show is doing that, part of it.”
