Thursday’s “The Daily Show” was one big commercial for host Jon Stewart’s new movie “Rosewater,” but plugging his own film on the show was just too weird for Stewart — so he called in John Oliver to do it.
The former Stewart sub-in and current HBO comedian spoke with “The Daily Show” correspondent Jason Jones and producer Tim Greenburg, whose 2009 trip to Iran for the show set in motion the events that would inspire “Rosewater.” He also spoke with Maziar Bahari, the Iranian journalist whose detention was depicted in the film.
“You’re welcome,” Bahari said before Oliver could even begin the interview. “Because if it was not for my arrest, Jon would not make a film, you would not host the show, and you would not have your show now.”
“Do I owe Ahmadinejad 10 percent of my future income?” Oliver quipped.
