Tea party champion Joe Miller announced Sunday that he is forming an exploratory committee in anticipation of a possible 2014 U.S. Senate run in Alaska.
Miller, who lost in the 2010 Senate race, told supporters in an email that he’s weighed the decision for several months.
“For several months now, my wife and I have engaged in serious reflection about our family, Alaska, and the state of our nation,” Miller said in the email, which was obtained by Roll Call. “After consultation with our political advisers, trusted friends, and many of our 2010 volunteers, we have decided to test the waters for a 2014 US Senate run.”
Miller followed up the email with an extended post on his website. In the post, Miller asked for donations and wondered if “grassroots conservatives” are willing to “join us in the fight for freedom.” Alaska Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell (R) has already formed an exploratory committee for a run in 2014, when Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK) will be up for re-election.
After securing the Republican nomination in the 2010 race, Miller lost in the general election to incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who waged a successful write-in campaign.
