Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL) was released early Thursday from an Alabama prison after serving a year and a half for misusing campaign funds, his father Rev. Jesse Jackson confirmed to the Chicago Tribune.

Jackson is expected to serve the remainder of his 2 1/2-year sentence in a halfway house in Washington, D.C., former Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) told the Tribune. Kennedy, now a mental health advocate, is a friend of Jackson’s and visited him in prison on Monday.

Officials told the newspaper that Jackson shaved some time off his sentence through good conduct and by completing a substance abuse treatment program. The Federal Bureau of Prisons lists Sept. 20 as Jackson’s release date.
