In an apparent attempt to deflect the attention that arose after his college ex-girlfriend recently accused him of abuse, a Kentucky Republican gubernatorial candidate has gone on the attack against his opponent.

The candidate, Kentucky agricultural commissioner James Comer, released a mailer last week with a picture of rival candidate Hal Heiner and President Barack Obama driving a golf cart. Beneath their names, text reads “the similarities are striking!”

On the other side, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal which reported the mailer, text reads “Hal Heiner can only hide so long. Find out more about the similarities between Obama and Heiner by going to WhatsHalHiding.com.” But the one-page website has no mention of Obama.

Over the last week, Comer repeatedly denied claims by ex-girlfriend Marilyn Thomas that he abused her and drove her to an abortion clinic when they were in college at Western Kentucky University. Comer accused Heiner of offering Thomas money if she came forward with the charges against Comer.

Two former roommates of Thomas came forward to affirm her claims against Comer.

“On one occasion, there was a heated argument between Marilyn Thomas and Jamie Comer and I had to threaten to call the police in order to get him to leave our apartment,” Jennifer Osborne, one of Thomas’s former roommates, said in a letter.

Wendy Curley, another former roommate of Thomas, also backed up her claims against Comer.

“I know she ended up getting pregnant in like October 1991 and had an abortion in the beginning of November, and I remember him seeing her to the dorm and just dropping her off after they got back from the abortion,” Curley told the Courier-Journal.

The primary is on May 19.
