After threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz in late 2011, Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said Monday that it has drafted a bill that would allow Iran to try to stop tankers heading to nations that support sanctions from shipping oil through the strait. The announcement comes one day after the European Union implemented wholesale sanctions on importing Iranian oil.

Iranian MP Ibrahim Agha-Mohammadi said that 100 of Tehran’s 290 members of parliament had already signed the bill. Critics point out that it would be difficult for Iran to verify the destination of any tanker, and that the American naval presence near the strait could block any Iranian attempts at closure.
