Iowa Evangelicals Worry Newt Gingrich Is Soft On Abortion

As Newt Gingrich’s campaign rises in the polls, evangelicals in Iowa are split over the new frontrunner. On the one hand, he signed the Susan B. Anthony’s List pro-life pledge to push legislation to end taxpayer funding of abortion and appoint pro-life judges. But on the other, Gingrich still supports the right to an abortion in the cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is at risk. As the Des Moines Register points out, “[a] significant bloc of Iowa evangelical Christians opposes abortion under any circumstances.”

Relatedly, the Register has compiled a list of Gingrich quotes from the 1990s and 2000s showing his support for issues like federally-funded stem cell research — the kind of quotes that may come back to haunt Gingrich in the Iowa caucuses.
