The gay couple whose kiss went viral after being filmed by Dodger Stadium’s kiss cam had no intention of making waves on Saturday, but called the experience “beautiful” and unexpected.

“All we did was kiss,” Steven Simone-Friedland told The Advocate in an interview published on Tuesday. “What made everyone’s day was the crowd reaction.”

During Saturday’s game, the two Dodgers fans kissed to wild applause along with a handful of other couples after the famous kiss cam panned over to their seat. The video ended up making the rounds online.

The paper reporter that the two men didn’t hesitate to appear on-screen when a cameraman asked if they wanted to participate.

“I turned to my husband, I turned to Rick, and I said ‘you know, this could go badly. This could not go well,'” Simone-Friedland told The Advocate. “But then we did it, because we thought it would be just so fun to do, and then we heard the crowd — and that was really unexpected, and beautiful, and affirming.”

The Los Angeles couple had been together for 20 years and married in Van Nuys, California in 2013.

Simone-Friedland told the paper that one of the best parts of the experience was the immediate return to normalcy after appearing on the big screen.

“I was talking to the woman behind me about the Pacquiao fight, and all the other sporting events. Nobody even flinched. And that is just telling. We were just simply Dodger fans,” he said.
