Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon (D) announced on Wednesday that she will not seek re-election next year, leaving unpopular Gov. Pat Quinn (D) without a running mate as he approaches the final year of his term, the Chicago Tribune reported.

“I spoke to the governor in December and told him that after completing my term as lieutenant governor, I look forward to serving Illinois in a role where I can be an even more effective advocate,” Simon said during a news conference. “In the coming months, I will have an announcement about where I can be the best advocate for the state of Illinois.”

The Tribune noted that Simon could be eyeing a run for attorney general. A survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling in November showed Quinn with a paltry approval rating of 25 percent, making him the most “unpopular governor in the country.”
