Former Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD) announced Monday that she will not run in South Dakota’s open U.S. Senate race next year.

Herseth Sandlin made the announcement in a post on her Facebook page, which included a photo of her son Zachary. After offering a Mother’s Day greeting, the Democrat said she will pass on a bid for the seat being vacated by Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD), citing her family and her “tremendous respect” for her colleagues at Raven Industries, a Sioux Falls, S.D.-based technology company where she has worked since August of last year.

“While I know you share my confidence that working together we could win a statewide race next year, I’m also confident that the decision not to run is the right decision for Max, Zachary, me and our entire family,” she wrote. “Zachary will be starting kindergarten in the fall of 2014, just weeks before next year’s general election. Further, I have tremendous respect for my fellow team members at Raven, and I’m committed to the success of the company.”

The announcement leaves former Tom Daschle aide Rick Weiland as the lone Democrat in the race. Former South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds (R) declared his candidacy last year. Herseth Sandlin served in Congress from 2004 until 2011. She was unseated by Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD) in 2010.
