Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, said Sunday that he opposed universal background checks for gun purchases because they only created a false sense of security but wouldn’t stop mass shootings. “We’re wasting our time going in that direction,” Pratt said.

“I think it’s a false security to think that somehow we’re going to spot problems when there’s really no way spot these problems,” Pratt said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Some of the most horrendous of the mass murders that have occurred recently, including the one in Newtown, would not have been stopped by a background check. The gun is stolen, the person has no prior criminal record.”

Instead, Pratt suggested getting rid of gun-free zones.
