California looks to be the next site of a push to recall state lawmakers after Democrats passed new gun restrictions.
Gun-rights activists in California are taking steps to recall several California legislators – all Democrats — Assembly Speaker John Pérez, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, Assembly woman Sharon Quirk-Silva, state Sens. Ben Hueso and Norma Torres, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.
Free California, a nonprofit run by a Republican strategist Jennifer Kerns who also was involved in the successful recall of two Colorado lawmakers over passing new gun legislation earlier in the year, is behind the recall efforts. At a press conference on Thursday, Kerns said the list of lawmakers could change, according to The San Jose Mercury News.
The move comes after California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed into law a package of gun-control measures earlier in October. Those measures included a ban on lead ammunition regularly used by hunters. Another bill in the package would have included semi-automatic rifles that have detachable magazine clips to California’s assault weapons ban list.
Kerns said that Free California is targeting lawmakers who were active in helping to pass the roughly dozen gun-control bills.
Free California needs to collect signatures of that total at least 12 percent of the population of the district of each lawmaker they’re hoping to recall. The group plans to start collecting signatures in the next few weeks.
