Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon (D) on Tuesday ordered additional National Guardsmen to help maintain order after the violence that erupted in Ferguson, Mo, the Associated Press reported.
The chaos broke out after prosecutor Robert McCulloch revealed that the grand jury decided not to indict Officer Darren Wilson for his fatal shooting of black unarmed teenager Michael Brown, the AP reported.
Monday night’s violence resulted in more than 80 arrests and several businesses being set on fire.
Nixon announced that he was calling in more National Guard troops to supplement the efforts of law enforcement, but he didn’t reveal how many additional troops would be called in or how long they would stay in Ferguson.
Chief Jon Belmar of the St. Louis County police said that he would like an additional 10,000 officers.
“I don’t think we can prevent folks who really are intent on destroying a community,” Belmar said.
